Corrections officer’s eye socket broken in attack

OKEECHOBEE—A corrections officer at Okeechobee Correctional Institute suffered a broken eye socket, two black eyes and cuts to the face when he was attacked by an inmate Oct. 8.

According to the OCSO Deputy Anthony Kibler’s report, Corrections Officer Michael Valentino was conducting cell searches in E-Dorm wing 3 when an inmate, Willie Bonner, started arguing with him. The officer ordered Bonner to the sally port. While walking to the dayroom, Bonner continued arguing with the officer, the report continues.

Once at the sally port, the officer ordered Bonner to “cuff up.” Bonner refused to allow himself to be handcuffed and attacked the officer. The 5’10”, 180 lb. Bonner struck the side of the officer’s head with a closed fist, causing Officer Valentino to fall to the ground, according to the report. Bonner continued to strike the officer with his fists.

As the inmate crouched over the him, the officer tried to take out his chemical agents. The inmate then grabbed Officer Valentino’s chemical agents can and attempted to use the spray on the officer. When the inmate could not figure out how to use the chemical agent, he started hitting the officer with the can.
