Officials at St. Brides Correctional Center in Chesapeake, Va., say they lost control in a portion of the facility for a time Thursday night. A Strike Team was eventually sent in to restore order at the facility. According to authorities, the incident happened in Unit F, which houses 64 youthful offenders ages 16-24 from around the state. Officials say the inmates became unruly, and at around 11:40pm the situation had progressed to the point that the unit was not under the control of corrections officials. At that time all corrections personnel withdrew from the unit and the unit was locked down. The Strike Team entered the facility and re-took control of the unit. Sixty-two of the 64 inmates were transferred Friday morning to Greensville Correctional Center in Jarrett, where they were placed in segregation. The two who remained at St. Bride's are also in a segregation unit. During the disturbance there were minor injuries to some of the inmates. There were no injuries to corrections personnel. There was, however, extensive damage to the housing unit and it is currently uninhabitable. Officials say will be an investigation to determine if any charges will be filed. St. Bride's houses at total of 590 inmates. |
