Health services for Rikers inmates come under fire |

City Council members on Tuesday grilled officials from Corizon Health Inc., the nation’s largest correctional health care provider, for what they say is the company’s failure to provide comprehensive and safe medical services to Rikers Island’s 11,000 inmates. The lack of proper medical care has been reported at length in the media over the past year and has contributed to controversy surrounding the facility’s conditions for both inmates and staff. Council members said at least a dozen inmate deaths since 2009 raise serious questions about the quality of care Corizon is providing and how much the city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene is doing to monitor reform.
