New chief taking action to reform state prison system |

SPRINGFIELD — Back in February, more than 1,000 state prison workers decided they'd rather spend their Sunday night watching Russell Wilson and Tom Brady play football. Using rules outlined in their collective bargaining agreement, the employees told their bosses they wouldn't be working their shifts that day, triggering a Super Bowl shuffle for overtime that officials say ended up costing Illinois taxpayers an additional $325,000 in wages. The numbers are contained in a memo from new Illinois Department of Corrections chief Donald Stolworthy to Gov. Bruce Rauner. The documents outline a number of issues Stolworthy thinks could be driving up the cost of the state's prison system. They also provide insight into the strategy Rauner may be using as he negotiates a new collective bargaining agreement with the state's largest employee union. Read More. |
