Yakima County jail inmates file claims for $18 million after Seahawks TV privilege revoked |

YAKIMA, Wash. — Yakima County paralegal Cindy Erwin had never seen anything like it — a swell of claims filed in a narrow time frame by jail inmates alleging serious maintenance problems and seeking roughly $18 million in damages. Complaints ranged from clogged sinks and a bug-infested floor drain to the absence of ladders on jail bunks and denial of outside yard time. The claims, 15 in all, were filed by inmates housed in the same unit of the jail’s annex. There was one claim for $50,000, four for $2 million each and 10 for $1 million apiece. “We’ve never had this before where we’ve had all these claims from one annex, and to come that quickly,” Erwin said. The claims began a day after the entire unit lost its television privileges for misbehavior, preventing inmates from watching the Jan. 10 Seattle Seahawks playoff game against the Carolina Panthers, which the Seahawks won 31-17.
