Prison damage at least $350,000 |

LINCOLN — The deadly weekend riot at the Tecumseh State Prison caused much more damage than initial estimates and was related to a lack of activity and programs for inmates at the 960-bed facility, state senators were told Thursday. The riot, in which inmates took over two housing units for at least 10 hours, resulted in $350,000 to $500,000 in damage, lawmakers said after meeting with State Corrections Director Scott Frakes. Earlier, prison officials had given only a partial estimate of damages: Between $30,000 and $50,000 to surveillance cameras. Inmates tore down walls, broke windows and set chairs and mattresses ablaze during the rampage that left two inmates dead and left cells for 128 inmates unusable. Read More. |
