FRANKFORT — The Kentucky Department of Corrections is hoping to combat a high number of staff vacancies and turnover rates in state prisons by increasing compensation for correctional officers and other hazardous duty staff, according to a government release.

The Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet announced Gov. Steve Beshear’s approval of the plan to help stabilize the workforce in state prisons on Thursday.

The plan includes pay raises for security staff; moving institutional hazardous duty, non-security staff to 40-hour work weeks; and implements a monthly stipend for members of the correctional emergency response teams, according to the JPSC release.

These plans will go into effect June 16, with the new work schedule and CERT stipend beginning Aug. 16.
