'Welcome Home Sunday' for Louisianians released from prison: Jarvis DeBerry

At a May 11 meeting Louisiana Chief Justice Bernette Johnson convened to discuss mass incarceration, the conversation eventually took a turn toward re-entry, that is, how to help people getting out of prison merge back into society.

It's harder than just staying out of trouble. Those who are on probation are required to have a stable address and regularly pay their probation fees. That requires a job that their record may prevent them from getting. It might also require taking a driver education course to obtain a license that would allow them to legally drive to a job.

The obstacles are many. The opportunities are few. It should come as no surprise, then, that so many people end up being returned to prison.
