SAN QUENTIN — Dozens of children will get to see their dads for an early Father’s Day at San Quentin State Prison as the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) and the Center for Restorative Justice Works (CRJW) host the 16th annual Get On The Bus special visiting event. Each year, Get On The Bus provides free transportation for children to visit their parents in prisons across the state. Caregivers accompany the children to and from the institutions. Throughout the day, Get On The Bus volunteers and CDCR staff host fun, bond-building activities such as group art projects, family photos, face painting, music and sports. Each child is sent home with a special letter from his or her dad. Keeping family connections strong is an important part of rehabilitation, both during and after incarceration. Regular visits between children and their incarcerated parents are proven to lower recidivism and improve family reunification. |
