Corrections counselor serves 210 inmates and over 100 officers

AMONG the concerns raised by lawmakers during the House budget hearing for the Department of Corrections is its lone counselor who serves up to 210 inmates and 100 officers.

Representative Leepan T. Guerrero said the department should have one or two more counselors who, he added, have a tough job.

“I also recommend that he or she be given a good salary because 210 inmates and just one counselor will not suffice, and the counselor might go crazy and of course we don’t want her to go crazy or leave Corrections because of this,” Guerrero said.

He said he is not satisfied with the present budget because Corrections also needs to address critical issues such as manpower and communications as well as food for the inmates.
