Toastmasters club helps inmates learn to communicate |

A convicted rapist shook hands with the governor Monday night as both men celebrated together. Jose Rodriguez, president of INnovators Club #4362, is serving a 40- to 50-year sentence at the State Penitentiary for first-degree sexual assault. Gov. Pete Ricketts is serving four years and nearly two million Nebraskans as the state’s executive. The two men couldn't look or be more different, but on Monday night, if only for 20 minutes, both shared a room, a message and a handshake. “There are men who can come to prison, get out, and get what they need to communicate effectively and contribute to society as a whole,” Rodriguez said. Ricketts pushed the prisoners to stick with Toastmasters because the club gives them the ability to connect and communicate with others, whether it be a potential employer or a significant other.
