State panel OKs $6.47M health unit for Portage prison |

MADISON — A larger Health Services Unit will be constructed next year at the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage to accommodate an increasing inmate population. The State Building Commission on Wednesday voted final approval of the $6.47 million project which replaces a facility built in 1985. “It was designed for a population of 450, now we’re averaging 830,” Roland Couey, the Department of Corrections budget director, told a commission subcommittee.
