Law enforcement members escort Special Olympics New York torch across Cayuga County during Torch Run |

AUBURN | The nearly two dozen runners pounded down Genesee Street, a light-flashing police escort clearing their way. A good look at the group's blue T-shirts — along with the silver torch carried by one participant — clued motorists and passengers into the runners' purpose: Supporting the Special Olympics. The runners spent Wednesday morning trekking across Cayuga County during the local leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, an annual event aimed at raising both funds and awareness for Special Olympics New York. Athletes with intellectual disabilities will compete in the state's summer games this weekend at SUNY Brockport. Local law enforcement members started their run at Rolling Wheels Raceway in Elbridge, heading west on Grant Avenue before making a pit stop at the city's Veterans Memorial Park. Along with students, members of the Cayuga County Sheriff's Office, New York State Police, Auburn Police Department and Auburn and Cayuga corrections officers laced up their running shoes and took part in the run.
