Manistee County Jail Will Begin Housing Outside Prisoners this Month |

“It doesn't make sense to have our officers spending all this time on the road, then sitting there at another prison watching them,” Michigan Department of Corrections Public Information Officer Chris Gautz said. That's the rationale behind one local jail's decision to take on more inmates. Right now, prisoners travel from the Pugsley Correctional Facility in Grand Traverse County to the Oaks Maximum Correctional in Manistee. But that will change sometime this month when the Manistee County Jail starts housing those inmates in the "Virtual Borders Program." Pugsley Correctional Facility doesn't want to drive the extra 120 miles a day, and the Manistee County Jail needs more inmates.
