JACKSON — Mississippi sheriffs, county officials and others said that a future without free inmate labor will be one of higher taxes, uncollected garbage, littered highways, unpainted government buildings and unrepaired patrol cars. The comments were made at a Wednesday news conference as part of an effort to pressure Corrections Commissioner Marshall Fisher to reverse his decision to close a program that sends some inmates to county jails. "The Mississippi Department of Corrections will terminate the joint city/county work center and redistribute these inmates to one of 17 MDOC community work centers across the state," Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie told The Meridian Star last month. "These inmates provide labor for the MDOT truck crews, they provide labor for our kitchen at the detention center and they assist the Highway Troop H in Meridian." Read More. |
