Norfolk man, 19, gets his high school diploma in jail |

Javonta Norfleet received his high school diploma Thursday in an unusual spot: within the confines of the Norfolk City Jail. Norfleet, 19, earned a standard high school diploma while serving a three-year sentence for a 2014 armed robbery. Norfleet is due to be released next year. While he is one of nine inmates who received diplomas Thursday, he is considered the first Norfolk Public Schools student to earn a standard diploma while serving time. Previously, inmates have earned special diplomas or certificates stating they passed General Educational Development tests. "It feels great just to know I got my high school diploma," Norfleet said. "Even though I'm in this situation, even though I haven't been to school in 12 months, I got my diploma." Read More. |
