Plans for Boyd jail expansion move forward

CATLETTSBURG — The Boyd County Detention Center could soon be expanded to double its potential to house more state prisoners.

Chief Deputy Tom Jurta and Deputy Judge-Executive Ed Radjunas gave reports and fielded questions for the fiscal court on Tuesday before the group voted to move forward with preliminary plans for construction that will cost between $100,000 and $150,000.

Judge-Executive Steve Towler said the county spends about $1 million a year on the jail, with expenses reaching $1.5 million a year.

He said officials want the jail to close the costly gap by acquiring more state inmates, which are housed at a rate of $31.34 per prisoner.
