N.H. budget talks do little to allay concerns over swelling prison overtime costs |

When the state’s fiscal year ends in just under two weeks, the Department of Corrections will have spent about $8.6 million on overtime. That is $1.2 million more than what lawmakers are poised to allot for the expense in the two coming fiscal years – combined. The department, which has struggled in recent years to maintain baseline staffing – the Concord prison is down at least 70 officers from what is advised to maintain critical operations – had requested $14.8 million, or twice the $7.4 million currently budgeted by the Legislature. “We know this is going to be a challenge over the next two years and we will continue to try to hire, recruiting and going to job fairs,” said spokesman Jeff Lyons. “But this is something that takes time.
