Prison honor block shut down after Richard W. Matt and David Sweat escape in Dannemora, New York

A prison honor block at Clinton Correctional Facility has been shut down following the escape of two inmates from the maximum security prison in Dannemora.

The good-behavior tier that housed the two former inmates was reverted to a regular prison block and no longer has the looser rules it did before the escape, according to a law enforcement source. The special tier is where the escapees, Richard W. Matt, 48 and David Sweat, 35, used power drills and hand tools to cut holes in the backs of their adjacent cells and a steam pipe that led them to freedom.

The looser restrictions on the honor block tier may have been a factor in the meticulous escape plan because the inmates in that section of the prison were able to cook, visit one another's cells and were generally given more liberties than inmates in other areas of the prison. Their assignment on the honor block also allowed them to wear and keep regular clothing other than their prison uniforms, which may have been critical in their escape when they clambered out of a sewer manhole a block from the prison on June 6.
