After Aramark issues, lawmakers propose having local health departments inspect prison kitchens |

LANSING — Two Upper Peninsula lawmakers want to have local health departments inspect prison kitchens after several incidents involving the private contractor serving food to inmates. Rep. John Kivela, D-Marquette, and Rep. Ed McBroon, R-Vulcan, have introduced legislation that would require prison kitchens be inspected by the local county health department. Currently, prisons are exempt from inspection by local county departments because they are not classified as a "food establishment." The Michigan Department of Corrections does its own inspections of prison kitchens, which are the same inspections done when the state ran food service operations, according to a department official. Kivela attirbuted the motivations for House Bill 4749 to the continued issues with Aramark, the private company that operates Michigan's prison food service. Read More. |
