Safety concerns as Arizona-run prisons struggle to hire |

The number of correctional-officer vacancies at Arizona's 10 state-run prisons has increased dramatically in the last two years, triggering concerns about understaffing. The Arizona Department of Corrections has roughly 550 vacant positions, up from 410 two years ago, bringing the job-vacancy rate to 8.49 percent. DOC spokesman Andrew Wilder said natural attrition, a rebounding economy and difficulties filling positions in rural areas may have contributed to the increase. But employee representatives say there are other factors, including poor morale, low salaries and increasing safety concerns. "A lot of my members that come to me, they tell me that the staffing levels are so low that they don't feel safe, so a lot of them are looking for other jobs," said Anthony Spears, president of the Arizona Corrections Association.
