A man who hanged himself Oct. 4 in the Jennings jail had been on suicide watch for two days in the St. Louis Justice Center immediately before being transferred to Jennings on an arrest warrant, but jailers in Jennings did not take precautions to prevent a suicide after taking him into custody, an investigation has found. The investigator found no evidence that jailers in St. Louis had told Jennings jailers about the suicide watch. Neither Jennings nor St. Louis officials would answer questions about what led to the breakdown, which was uncovered by a St. Louis County Police investigation into the death of DeJuan Brison, 26. Brison used a blanket to hang himself from the bars of his cell door about 3½ hours after being transferred to the Jennings jail. After being found unresponsive in his cell by a guard, he was taken to a hospital, where he died Oct. 21. The information about the suicide watch was in the county’s investigation report that the Post-Dispatch obtained from the city of Jennings in response to a Missouri Sunshine Law request. Read More. |
