Idaho prison chief tackles challenges: Kempf started career at Pocatello women's lockup |

Kevin Kempf has moved up the top of the Idaho Department of Correction, he said he has always adhered to two main principles — seeking the best advice and transparency. Kempf started his career as a corrections officer at the Womens Correctional Center in Pocatello in 1995. He took over leadership of the entire state department in December of 2014. Kempf said those principles served him well as he took the helm of a department struggling with a controversy over a canceled contract with Corrections Corporation of America to run one of the main prison facilities near Boise and a long term lawsuit over the medical and mental health treatment of state prisoners. “I think I'm handling it well,” Kempf said about his position which he assumed last December.
