Independent review of Tennessee prison system needed |

Republicans and Democrats have sounded the alarm on the problems plaguing Tennessee’s prison system. Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, R-Blountville, acknowledged a crisis — “When there's this much smoke, there's usually fire somewhere," he said on Aug. 13 — and Sen. Jeff Yarbro, D-Nashville, this past week called for an investigation into the 2013 death of an inmate. As The Tennessean reported last week, inmate Elbert Thorton, died a “natural death,” according to an official Department of Correction report. But an initial medical examiner's report on the day of Thornton's death deemed it "suspicious, unusual or unnatural." An autopsy conducted the following day listed Thornton's cause of death as "multiple blunt force traumatic and thermal injuries." Read More. |
