Department of Corrections Commissioner rejects PCF |

The state prison overcrowding task force met in St. Paul yesterday. One of their main topics of discussion was prison sentences the state hands out for drug offenses, and how they contribute to prison overcrowding. Some believe the Minnesota Department of Corrections will ask for 140 million dollars in a state bonding bill this upcoming session to add a new wing to an existing state prison, while people in the Appleton area would like the state to lease the currently vacant Prairie Correctional Facility. Members of the Senate Bonding Committee were in Appleton yesterday afternoon. For 140 million dollars the state could lease the 1600 bed PCF for 20 years. However, in an article in the Swift County Monitor News this week, Minnesota Corrections Commissioner Tom Roy said "I have said very publicly, as has the governor, that the support of private prisons is not on our agenda." Roy said he wouldn't rule PCF out, but said he doesn't like the basic principal of private for-profit companies running prisons. Read More. |
