Good morning — San Bernardino, Calif., is the latest community to suffer a mass shooting, with 14 people killed Wednesday at a holiday party. It was the worst attack since the Newtown elementary school horror nearly three years ago, and it was the 354th mass shooting in the United States this year. (AP, NYT)

In a statement, Gov. Andrew Cuomo renewed his call for federal gun control, asking: “How can we rationalize this kind of inaction as 33,000 people are killed every year in the nation due to gun-related violence?”

Cuomo is in New York City again today. In other headlines:

The Assembly’s Correction Committee heard Wednesday from a parade of speakers about the need for more independent oversight of the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. Among the absent: state Inspector General Catherine Leahy Scott, who declined to attend the hearing, citing ongoing investigations of the Dannemora escape and the April death of an inmate at Fishkill Correctional Facility. Assemblyman Danny O’Donnell, committee chairman, threatened to subpoena Leahy Scott if she does not voluntarily agree to testify at a future hearing.
