Work-release program fading away? Pierce County preparing shift from Huber

The future of work-release for inmates at the Pierce County Jail appears to be fading as officials, mindful of staffing levels and costs, pursue a more technology-driven path.

Pierce County Board members last month approved designs for a new $17.9 million jail to be built along Hwy. 65 in north Ellsworth. Absent from the plans is a space dedicated to house inmates on work release, known as the Huber program.

Pierce County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Jason Matthys said there is a “shell” space among features at the new facility that could will allow for multiple uses.
