Cook County Jail Capt. Tyrone Everhart Sr. said jail officials knew months ago that at least one of six inmates who escaped last week had previously plotted a break. He had some inside knowledge: One of the escapees is his son. Everhart Sr., a longtime jail employee, said Sunday he helped land his son, Tyrone Everhart Jr., in the maximum security unit of the jail four months ago when he read a letter his son wrote to his girlfriend plotting an escape from jail. And two months ago his estranged son -- "We haven't seen eye to eye since he was 17" -- broke free of security at a court hearing and ran outside the Markham courthouse. On Sunday, Everhart Jr., 28, was one of the six inmates who escaped from the county jail. That his son broke out of jail despite those earlier warnings should be blamed on jail guards who became too relaxed, Everhart Sr. said. "Really it's just complacence. [The guards] think they know these guys, all they are is softening up for the kill," Everhart Sr. said. "They watch you when you're not watching them. They know when you're having a bad day. It's their job to get out. It's our job to keep them in. It's almost like a Mexican standoff." The elder Everhart was among guards once accused of having involvement in an alleged beating of inmates at the jail. In the letter, Everhart Jr. allegedly asked his girlfriend to run away with him and their baby. His plan involved knocking down guards, running away and the girlfriend having a car ready. The girlfriend, who lives in the same building as Everhart Sr., gave him the letter, he said. Everhart Sr. reported it to the jail director, and his son was moved to the maximum security unit of the jail, he said. When he was moved, son called his father to ask what happened. "'Dad, they moved me to ABO,'" Everhart Sr. said his son told him, referring to the Abnormal Behavior Observation unit. "He knew exactly who put him there." Two months ago, Everhart Jr. broke free of security during a court hearing, ran out of the Markham Courthouse and nearly to the street, according to his father. Two officers tackled him but at one point he took out a razor and cut his throat, his father said. Authorities visited the family's residence Sunday and questioned Everhart Jr.'s girlfriend and interrogated another man who also lives at the residence. They may have been mistaken him for Everhart Jr., his father said. |
