Female inmate dies in Alaskan jail

A female inmate was discovered dead last week at Anchorage's Sixth Avenue Correctional Center, according to state troopers and the Alaska Department of Corrections.
Rose Lake, 46, appears to have died of natural causes, said Department of Corrections spokesman Bruce Richards.
Lake was intoxicated at the time of her arrest the afternoon before on a trespassing charge and was placed in a detox cell, Richards said. Correctional officers moved her to a dormitory with other female inmates at 4:30 p.m. She lay down and appeared to be asleep, said Richards, special assistant to the commissioner.
At 1:30 p.m. Sunday, corrections officers arrived to take some inmates, including Lake, to court. She did not awaken, and another inmate found her cold to the touch. Jail officials notified state troopers, who conducted an investigation.
Lake is the fourth inmate known to have died at the Sixth Avenue jail in 19 months. James Leonard, 38, was discovered dead on July 12, 1999. His death was ruled a suicide. Andrew Paton, 26, committed suicide with a belt on Dec. 17. Less than two weeks later, Thomas Sage was strangled by another inmate. Terry Stromme was charged with first-degree murder.
