The major perk to corrections is there is never a shortage of overtime. If you are willing to work the pay is there. I know in my part of the country we have an opioid epidemic junkies, junkies everywhere.

You will need a Green Card at the very least. To work in any Federal institution you would have to be an American Citizen.

I work in female institution right now. It’s a major challenge as female offenders seem to have way more needs than males.
The Corrections Model is very different in Canada as well

America is well. There are parts that do have violence and drug issues but for the most part you can live in relative peace so long as you are not breaking laws.

The economy is getting better and work if you are willing to do a good job is out there. California is very expensive to live in compared to other places in the US. You can read and write English you’re already half way there. Citizenship testing is fairly easy they even have guides for them to study. The process will take some time to get through though. But you can apply for a work visa which is a much faster process then citizenship.

I can’t say for sure, but I’d say your best bet would be to contact the US department of Labor and or the Department of Immigration. I’m willing to bet they would want to know which DOC you had plans of working for. In my first prison I worked with a CO who was born in raised in England. Good luck, hope that helps.

New York state prisons are hiring and they have three classes starting soon in Albany.State DOC officers get very good pay and benefits the only downside is you must work near NY City for about 2 years before you can transfer to another of the 77 state prisons. On our county level we do not hire full time that often because of budget concerns or unless someone in seniority (like myself) retires. We hire many part-time officers.

The Ohio prison system is run by professional Officers and staff for the most part. Don’t know if theyr’e hiring right now but, as in any place, you got to want to do the job and mix with the right people. There are deadbeats and idiots in every prison in every state. Avoid them like the plague. You will know who to hang with. Right now, as I left in February, the good far out weighs the bad. Stay alert and be thick skinned. Only way to last.
