I have a question that I have not seen on here. Other than the tactical teams do any facilities use EMT’s/Medics on a regular basis? The reason I ask, is because the unit I work on has had 3 OD related cardiac arrest events, where CO’s wound up doing CPR. The last event, the med staff showed up but the CO’s (who 2 out of three happened to be EMT’s) directed the event. The last one, the RN had never experienced a cardiac arrest before that night. I happened to be there and was able to orchestrate the effort, the inmate lived. I have talked to our administration about including EMT’s in our response plans, but they have told me that we have med staff that are qualified. I’m just curious if any facility’s use EMT’s as line staff and how they got the program going.
