| Description: | Under direct supervision, assists higher level staff in executing and implementing predetermined drug treatment programs. TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES Although it is not possible to provide an exhaustive list of all types of duties, responsibilities and performance standards, the following are essential job functions: 1. Encourages, motivates, and promotes the client's treatment; observes, monitors and records client progress and behaviors. 2. Participates in the implementation of established therapeutic and rehabilitative programs. 3. Prepares and maintains the clinical records of clients assigned to their caseload. 4. Screens and orients new and re-entry admissions. 5. Conducts recreational and social activities for clients. 6. Prepares monthly standard reports and reviews for accuracy. 7. Participates in staff meetings and in the making of recommendations regarding evaluations and progress for clients. 8. Conducts individual and group sessions. Conducts recommended counseling sessions. 9. Completes in-service training to meet the requirements for continued personal and professional self-development. 10. Complies with Cornell Corrections work rules and policies as explained in the company employee handbook and responds positively to directives from managers and supervisors to ensure conformance to standards. 11. Adheres to Cornell Corrections attendance policy; works overtime as required, to ensure accounting department deadlines are met. 12. Complies with company safety rules; takes appropriate corrective action to ensure work is performed in a safe manner and without injury to self or others. 13. Communicates effectively with all levels of staff in a manner that promotes a team spirit and a sense of cooperation. 14. Participates in quality improvement process activity meetings. EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in psychology, sociology, social work, criminal justice or related field, or equivalent in work/life experience; certification as a Counselor Intern by DSHS is required. EXPERIENCE: This may be an entry-level position with appropriate educational background. One-year experience in substance abuse treatment is preferred. KNOWLEDGE: Familiar with the disease concept of chemical dependency, 12 step recovery principles and counseling theories. SKILLS/ABILITIES: Must have a customer service oriented attitude, be able to interact well with all levels of staff/employees and be able to plan, schedule and effectively communicate with residents and staff. PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS: Frequent sitting, intermittent walking, standing, bending, lifting (25lbs max); gross and fine manual dexterity; must be able to visually observe the residents and staff; detect odors through sense of smell for such things as marijuana and alcohol; hear, understand, and interpret staff behavior; communicate verbally and in written form. WORK ENVIRONMENT: This is a residential treatment center. Office areas are well-illuminated and are relatively quiet. Outside temperatures may reach well into the 100's in the summer, while winter temperatures may reach freezing. JOB REQUIREMENTS: 1. Personal vehicle available for company use. 2. Must be able to pass criminal and background investigation. 3. Valid driver's license for state in which facility is located. 4. Must be able to meet company automobile insurance standards. 5. Must be certified as an LCDC Counselor Intern trough the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). |
