| Description: | Under general supervision, classifies and assigns inmates committed to the correctional institution. MAJOR DUTIES: Although it is not possible to provide an exhaustive list of all types of duties, responsibilities and performance standards, the following are the essential job functions: 1. Perform advanced classification activities in an institution, using inmate history and background information; make recommendations as to which program assignments would be best for treatment; oversee difficult advanced classification and counseling cases. 2. Interview incoming inmates to obtain personal history, educational and socioeconomic background; and prepare full reports on individual case histories and parole summaries. 3. Screen inmate records for eligibility for modification of sentence; may present information to the court in judicial review hearings. 4. Review work and conduct records of all assigned inmates to determine progress and necessity of changing assignments or classification; advise inmates on institutional adjustments or vocational skills, training needs, job opportunities, community rehabilitation and employment resources and oversees related areas. 5. Maintain detailed records and issues periodic reports. 6. Promote the assistance and services of public and private agencies in the solution of problems of treatment. 7. Receive and take necessary action on incoming and outgoing mail to or from assigned inmates. 8. Assist inmates in the preparation and filing of certain documents and correspondence. 9. Completes all required forms necessary on inmates and submits to proper authorities. 10. Assist and advises inmates in personal and family problems. 11. Maintain confidentiality obtained through job duties regarding employees, vendors, inmates, outside agencies, etc., so that sensitive information is only given on a "need to know" basis. 12. Comply with Cornell Corrections' work rules and policies as explained in the company employee handbook, applicable rules and the Facility's Policy and Procedure Manual; and respond positively to directives from managers and supervisors to ensure conformance to standards. 13. Comply with company safety rules; take appropriate corrective action to ensure work is performed in a safe manner and without injury to self or others. 14. Perform other duties as assigned. 15. This position requires coverage including all shifts, weekends, and holidays. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Bachelor's Degree (or an equivalent combination of education and experience) in psychology, sociology, social work, criminology, education, criminal justice administration or related field. A minimum of two years of correctional records management or field supervision of inmates preferred. 2. Technical knowledge of inmate management and record keeping aspects of institution's operation preferred. 3. Preferred knowledge of various associated agency policies as they pertain to inmate rights and responsibilities and be able to represent inmates' best interests. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 1. The ability to work within an environment that requires frequent sitting, intermittent standing, bending, stooping and lifting up to a minimum of 25 pounds. WORK ENVIRONMENT: 1. Communicate with all levels of staff in a manner that promotes a team spirit and a sense of cooperation. 3. Ability to hear, understand and interpret verbal instruction. 4. Ability to handle a variety of moderately complex tasks; express thoughts logically, in English, in written and verbal form, using correct grammar. JOB REQUIREMENTS: 1. Must be at least 21 years of age. 2. Applicant must be able to pass criminal background investigation and drug screening. 3. Before going on duty alone, satisfactory completion of an adequate training program for correctional staff. 4. Must be prepared and trained to use physical control in situations where necessary. 5. Applicant must be willing and able to fulfill all job-related travel normally associated with this position. |
