| Description: | Under close supervision, maintain continuous state of alertness and awareness to control and secure the facility and residents, and to operate within legal constraints and contract stipulations. TYPICAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: Although it is not possible to provide an exhaustive list of all types of duties, responsibilities and performance standards, the following are the essential job functions: 1. May perform all duties of Correctional officer. 2. Ensure proper processing and documentation of all incoming residents and those being released in compliance with directions from Chief Correctional Supervisor or Correctional Supervisor, so that the process takes place in an efficient and safe manner and that proper tracking occurs, in compliance with contracting agency's requirements. 3. Supervise facility yard activities, which include, but are not limited to: visual resident counts; work crew supervision; facility movement with regards to visitors, vendors or contractors so that Cornell Corrections' procedures and contracting agency requirements are met. 4. Patrol by walking the perimeter regularly to keep it free of unauthorized individuals and equipment. 5. Inventory and secure residents' property and complete Property Inventory Form upon their arrival. Issue proper clothing and linen. Upon release, return personal clothing and any other items that were secured upon residents' arrival so that inmates' personal belongings are secured and accounted for. 6. May assume duties of the Correctional Supervisor in his/her absence. 7. Ensure guns and/or weapons of law enforcement officials are properly stored so that they are safe and secure in the designated area and inaccessible to unauthorized personnel. 8. Provide shift documentation in own handwriting (e.g., end of shift reports, work orders, security reports, unusual incidents, etc.) that is legible and concise, and that meets company standards and contracting agency requirements. 9. Comply with Cornell Corrections work rules and policies as explained in the company Employee Handbook, and the Facility Policies and Procedures Manual; and respond positively to directives from managers and supervisors in a cooperative spirit to ensure conformance to standards. 10. Adhere to Cornell Corrections' attendance policy; be available to work all shifts; work overtime as required; to ensure adequate coverage of the program and to ensure the safety and security of the residents. 11. Comply with Facility safety rules; take appropriate corrective action to ensure work is performed in a safe manner and without injury to self or others. 12. Communicate effectively with all levels of staff in a manner that promotes a team spirit and a sense of cooperation. EXPERIENCE/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Reading, writing and math skills equivalent with those normally obtained through a high school education. SPECIAL TRAINING and AGE REQUIREMENTS: In all cases, the applicant shall have attained twenty-one years of age and must successfully complete the training program for correctional officers. SKILLS / ABILITIES: Write legible reports in English, using correct grammar. Add, subtract, multiply divide and calculate percentages. Able to plan, motivate, control, schedule and train; react quickly and appropriately to emergency situations; effectively communicate with residents and staff. PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS: Frequent walking, bending, stooping, standing, sitting, lifting (25 lbs maximum); often walk over uneven ground, out of doors, in weather of varying extremes; gross and fine manual dexterity; must be able to visually observe residents and staff; detect odors by smelling for such things as marijuana and alcohol; hear, understand, and interpret resident and employee behavior; communicate verbally and in writing. Inmate population may become unruly at times, and escapes may be attempted, requiring quick, reflexive responses and the possible use of physical restraint. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Maximum security risk prison setting. Office areas are well-illuminated and are relatively quiet. Outside temperatures can reach well into the 100's during the summer season. |
