Description: GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Under supervision of the Nursing Director, provide routine medical care for Regional Correctional Center inmates. In this situation the position requires the direction of inmates receiving medical care, which requires a specialized practice within the environment. MAJOR DUTIES: Although it is not possible to provide an exhaustive list of all types of duties, responsibilities and performance standards, the following are the essential job functions: 1. Assists in the treatment of inmates under direction of a physician and standing orders or protocols. 2. Treats minor medical problems and reacts to medical emergencies. 4. Makes appropriate referrals to medical agencies/practitioners. 5. Controls and inventories drugs and other medical supplies. 6. Dispenses physician prescribed and non-prescription medications as needed. 7. Maintains medical files for all inmates. 8. Promotes good health habits, hygiene, and nutrition with inmate population. 9. Assists in the development of policies and procedures to insure regulatory compliance and the delivery of quality services. 10. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local licensing, inspection and reporting requirements. 12. Participates in clinical activities as needed. 13. Maintains compliance with exposure control plans. 14. Maintain confidentiality obtained through job duties regarding employees, vendors, inmates, outside agencies, etc., so that sensitive information is only given on a "need to know" basis. 15. Comply with Cornell Companies work rules and policies as explained in the Company Employee Handbook, applicable rules and the Facility's Policy and Procedure Manual; and respond positively to directives from managers and supervisors to ensure conformance to standards. 16. Comply with company safety rules; take appropriate corrective action to ensure work is performed in a safe manner and without injury to self or others. 17. Performs other duties as assigned or as situation dictates. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Possession of a certificate from an accredited practical nursing education program 2. Familiarity with pharmacological aspects of drugs. 3. Emergency medical aid experience. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The ability to work within an environment that requires frequent sitting, intermittent standing, bending, stooping and lifting up to a minimum of 25 pounds. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The primary workstation being within the secure walls of the facility demonstrates a specialized training practice. Employee may be required to perform necessary duties both indoors and outdoors. Possible adverse weather or other uncontrollable conditions may exist from time to time. SKILLS /ABILITIES: 1. Ability to handle a variety of moderately complex tasks; express thoughts logically, in English, in written and verbal form, using correct grammar. 2. The ability to utilize effective time management skills. 3. Communicate with all levels of staff in a manner that promotes a team spirit and a sense of cooperation. 4. Ability to hear, understand, and interpret verbal instructions. 5. Ability to converse with visitors and telephone calls in such a way as to portray the professional atmosphere of the company. JOB REQUIREMENTS: 1. Must be at least 21 years of age. 2. Applicant must be able to pass criminal background investigation and drug screening. 3. Valid driver's license for state in which facility is located. 4. Must be able to meet company automobile insurance standards. 5. Before going on duty alone, satisfactory completion of an adequate training program for correctional staff. 6. Satisfactory completion of minimum testing or professional evaluation to determine the fitness of the individual to serve in the position. 7. Must be prepared and trained to use physical control in situations where necessary. 8. Must have immediate access to a telephone to be able to respond to emergency situations. 9. Applicant must be willing and able to fulfill all job-related travel normally associated with this position.
