Description: Corrections Officers are limited commissioned officers with the Olympia Police Department. Under general supervision, Corrections Officers are responsible for the supervision of the Olympia City Jail. Corrections Officers are accountable for the safety and well being of prisoners; and the safety of employees and citizens in the vicinity of the jail. Corrections Officers have constant, daily contact with jail prisoners, other Police Department employees and the general public. Contacts with prisoners are negative by nature and require a great deal of sensitivity, alertness and interpersonal skill. City Information: The Olympia Police Department believes that protection of lives and property, maintenance of public order and the fostering of a feeling of safety are the mutual responsibility of the Department and the community. The Department also believes that proper police authority is derived from the community, within the context of codified law, not imposed on it. This philosophical approach to policing is popularly known as "community policing.” For community policing to be practically applied, it needs to reflect community values, priorities and realities. The Department refers to this tailored-to-Olympia approach to policing as “policing the Olympia way.” Population: 42,514 (2000 Census) Department Information: Olympia’s Chief of Police is Gary Michel. Chief Michel heads a department of over 100 employees working in Field Operations, Support Services (includes the City Jail), and Administrative Services, in addition to many volunteers. BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Officers who can converse proficiently in Spanish, Asian, Pacific Islander, Russian, Slavic, and Sign Languages qualify for a 3.3% increase in base pay. Language skills will be confirmed by a language specialist. Job Requirements: 21 years of age;U.S. Citizen; High School Grad/GED: Valid WASHINGTON State Driver's License; Ability to Read and Speak the English Language; Successful completion of the Corrections Officer Academy sponsored by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission is required within six months of employment. Special Requirements: Successful completion of polygraph and criminal background investigation are required prior to hire. Additional Requirements Successful completion of psychological and medical examination is a condition of employment. Ability to meet and maintain physical and health standards established in the bargaining agreement is a condition of employment. Ability to possess a firearm in accordance with Federal or State regulations is a condition of continuing employment. Conviction of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence may result in not being hired or termination of employment as a commissioned corrections officer.
