Description: | Anne Arundel County Government is now accepting applications to fill full-time Detention Officer positions at one of two Detention Facilities within the County. Detention Officers with Anne Arundel County are career minded individuals who are part of a team of dedicated public safety officers. They take great pride in their community service by ensuring the safety and security of inmates and therefore, the citizens of this county. This is responsible work in adult corrections in maintaining order and supervising inmates in the County Detention Center. According to Senate Bill 123, which was enacted on October 1, 2008, individuals who apply for employment or are employed as Correctional Officers for the Anne Arundel County Department of Detention Facilities or in any capacity that involves direct personal contact with an inmate in the Department; and generally relating to the Anne Arundel County Department of Detention Facilities, shall submit to or take a lie detector or similar test. NATURE AND VARIETY OF WORK This work involves responsibility for performing, under general supervision, duties related to the direct and indirect supervision of inmates, transportation of inmates, prompt action in responding to emergencies and maintaining order and cleanliness of the facility. Duties may include shift work, outdoor work, driving vehicles, and exposure to dangerous situations in and out of the facility. This work requires an understanding of adult correctional work and departmental rules and regulations. Employees in this classification are designated essential employees, and must report to work under all weather conditions. NOTE: POSITIONS IN THIS CLASSIFICATION ARE DESIGNATED SAFETY SENSITIVE AND ARE THEREFORE, SUBJECT TO RANDOM ALCOHOL AND CONTROLLED DANGEROUS SUBSTANCE TESTING. Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school; a minimum age of 18 at the time of appointment; and a valid non-commercial Class C motor vehicle operator's license. |
Special Instructions: | SELECTION PROCEDURES: After you complete the application, the following procedures are generally followed: 1. YOU WILL RECEIVE A LETTER inviting you to the written exam, if you meet the minimum qualifications for the position. You may be asked at the written exam to provide additional information about your background, job experience, education and other relevant information. **NOTE** Written exam dates are going to be Friday, October 15th, Friday, October 22nd and Friday, November 5th, if necessary. You will be scheduled for one written exam based on your date of application and the number of applications received. 2. The written exam score and the additional information you have provided will be evaluated by the Detention Officer Review Committee, who will then select the applicants who will proceed to the Polygraph Test. An indication of deception on the polygraph will remove a candidate from consideration in this process. 3. Upon completion of the background investigation, the Detention Officer Review Committee will review all available information and will recommend the best candidates for the employment interview by the Detention Center. 4. Those candidates given a conditional job offer will then undergo a complete medical examination and a psychological evaluation. A County appointed physician will assess the candidate's physical fitness to determine their ability to perform the essential functions of the position. A licensed mental health care professional shall perform an examination to assess the candidate's emotional and mental fitness in performing the essential functions of the position. 5. Reason(s) for disqualification of candidates may include, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: poor work history, poor driving record, felony conviction, falsification of application or other documents, failure to meet physical standards, indication of deception on the polygraph, inability to competitively complete any of the component parts of the selection process, or any other disqualifying causes determined by the Detention Center and/or the Office of Personnel. 6. ONCE THE CANDIDATE HAS SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE ENTIRE SELECTION PROCESS AND IS HIRED, THEY WILL BE REQUIRED WITHIN THE FIRST YEAR OF EMPLOYMENT TO ATTEND THE MARYLAND CORRECTIONAL TRAINING ACADEMY FOR THE SPECIFIED TRAINING PERIOD.
