Description: The Vermont Department of Corrections seeks a seasoned, proven leader challenged to manage one of the State Correctional Facilities. The facilities within Vermont differ widely from 100 bed Work Camps to 400 bed Central Receiving facilities. The facility custody levels range from minimum to medium-security throughout the state, housing pre-trial detention and sentenced male and female populations. Depending upon the location, operational features differ throughout the state from a special needs (infirmary, mental health, disability needs) facility to external work camps and vocational industries. Many of the facilities contain some level of treatment programming focusing on the substance abuse and rehabilitative needs of the incarcerative population and each facility is responsible for reintegrating individuals back into the community. Responsibilities will include directing all facility and program operations, and ensuring the safety and security of both staff and inmates. Desired credentials would include a Bachelor's degree and six years at a professional level in the broad area of human services, including five years in either a correctional setting or a role requiring frequent interaction with correctional facility administration and inmates, coordinating with a correctional facility program, or direct casework with correctional inmates. Related graduate work may be substituted for the one year of broad human services experience. Substitution is on a semester for six months basis. OR: HS graduation or equivalent and ten years at a professional level in the broad area of human services, including five years in either a correctional setting or a role requiring frequent interaction with correctional facility administration and inmates, coordinating with a correctional facility program, or direct casework with correctional inmates. Related college level coursework may be substituted for up to four years of broad human services experience. Substitution is on a semester for six months basis. General Job Description Correctional and managerial work within the Department of Corrections as the head of a correctional facility. The role involves the provision of proper security for inmates, staff and the public as well as the delivery of a variety of educational, rehabilitative, and training programs for inmates. The Superintendent is responsible for the operation of the institution through subordinate staff, twenty- four hours a day, seven days a week. Duties are carried out under the supervision of the corrections Security and Operations Director for purposes of security and operations issues, and under the supervision of the Corrections Program Services Director for both staff and inmate training and development activities. Extensive liaison with Probation and Parole, law enforcement, court, Vermont Correctional Industries, and other criminal justice personnel occurs. Supervision is exercised over a subordinate staff of professional, technical, correctional, and clerical employees. All employees of the Agency of Human Services perform their respective functions adhering to four key practices: customer service, holistic service, strengths-based relationships and results orientation. Working Conditions Work is mainly performed in the environment of a correctional facility. Some travel both in-state and out-of-state is required. Private means of transportation may be required for some amount of travel. Position involves 24-hour responsibility for the safety and security of the facility operations.
