The start of your career in Corrections begins with a week at the correctional facility observing the duties and role of a correctional officer. Then, the next five weeks of instruction are at the Vermont Correctional Academy (http://doc.vermont.gov/involvement/careers-in-corrections/vca), where you will learn the core skill set of a corrections professional. After graduation, you will participate in eighty hours of onsite training supervised by staff at your new facility. The majority of our correctional officers start out with a full time temporary position and often move on to a permanent position as they become available. The Department of Human Resources continuously accepts applications to fill temporary vacancies. Temporary appointments made from this announcement have the potential to become permanent classified. Temporary employees do not receive benefits and cannot work more than 1520 hours per year. Temporary employees may very likely work 40 hours per week but could work less. The amount of hours worked will vary from facility to facility, depending on current need. Correctional duties involve the supervision, custody, treatment, and training of inmates confined in a correctional facility. Duties are performed under the supervision of higher ranking staff and in accordance with operational procedures of the assigned facility.
