Description: Duties

Provides medically necessary treatment and rehabilitative services to children/youth and their family or surrogate caregiver(s) with an emphasis on Medication/ Somatic and Diagnostic/Assessment services.

Provides other core services or specialty services as appropriate including crisis services and treatment of individuals with co-occurring disorders. Completes psychiatric assessments utilizing the five axis DSM IV system or its current equivalent. Works closely with family members and other members of a multi-disciplinary treatment team. Screens for medical problems or risks and refers children youth to appropriate non-psychiatric care.

Provides education on mental illness and medications to children/youth and family members. Actively involves children, youth, and their families in the creation of Individual Plans of Care (IPC).

Obtains necessary laboratory services and performs needed AlMs assessments. Performs assessment for children/youth who are committed to outpatient care by court order. May be called upon to write petitions for involuntary court commitment.

Treats children/youth, family members and others with dignity and respect. Communicates a welcoming attitude and conveys empathy and hope to children/youth and their families including those with co-occurring disorders and provides services that are culturally competent.

Maintains clinical documentation according to Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services, Court Ordered and Medicare/Medicaid requirements and standards. Treats all clinical information in a manner consistent with HIPAA requirements for privacy.

Follows state of the art clinical practice standards and requirements and additional clinical practice standards and requirements as may be issued by DYRS.

Participates in DYRS special initiatives including DCMAP as it pertains to children/youth; Continuous, Comprehensive, Integrated Systems of Care (CCISC) for treatment of co-occurring disorders; services to the homeless children; emergency response; and other initiatives as they arise.

Complies with DYRS and industry standards/requirements pertaining to scheduling and billing and follows productivity standards including percentage of time spent in direct patient care.

Participates in psychiatric peer review and quality improvement activities including development and implementation of corrective action plans.

Provides consultation and authoritative professional opinions and advice regarding extremely difficult clinical or related issues to other licensed providers and credentialed staff.

Keeps up to date with best practices in child psychiatry and community mental health. Participates in on-going continuing education.

Provides clinical supervision to other clinicians and to psychiatric residents. Attends required psychiatric and professional staff meetings and team meetings. May work on rotating shifts or uncommon tours of duty depending on program assignment and participates in after-hours telephone on-call rotation. Participates in Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS) emergency response activities.

Qualifications

Education Requirement: Doctorate of Medicine MD

Specialized Experience: Incumbent must possess a current, unrestricted license to practice medicine in the District.

Must have completed an APA approved psychiatric residency and child & adolescent psychiatry fellowship or training program and be board eligible for certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
