Description: This position reports directly to the RN-Director of Nursing.

Primary Function

The Licensed Practical Nurse position is responsible for application and administration of nursing skills in a correctional center to include conducting medication rounds and all other tasks assigned by the RN-Director of Nursing.

Duties and Responsibilities

This position may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all tasks which may be found in the position. The employee must be able to perform all of the duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
  1. Works closely with the center's physician in providing proper medical care for those confined.
  2. Schedules dental and medical appointments per physician's orders.
  3. Provides emergency medical assistance.
  4. Conducts medical history interviews and prepares medical history and physical reports.
  5. Assists the center's physician in conducting sick call.
  6. Administers medicine dosage and treatment per physician's orders.
  7. Maintains control of all medications and drugs on hand in accordance with policies and procedures.
  8. Assures that policies and procedures regarding the Medical Department are followed.
  9. Completes reports and medical forms.
  10. Assures that the medical office is clean and properly stocked.
  11. Assures that all medications and supplies are promptly ordered.
  12. Any other duties assigned by higher authority.
  Knowledge and Abilities:
  1. General knowledge of nursing theory and LPN scope of practice.
  2. General knowledge of pharmacology, immunization, medical supply, medical administration, and preventive medicine.
  3. Ability to apply nursing techniques within the LPN scope of practice.
  4. Ability to administer medications and apply therapeutic treatment as prescribed.
  5. Ability to understand and work with inmate patients.
  6. Ability to follow technical, oral and written instructions to exact detail.
  7. Ability to maintain accurate records.
  8. Ability to plan and supervise work of subordinates.
  9. Ability to draw blood from patients.
  10. Ability to write legibly, accurately, and concisely.
  11. Ability to communicate with staff, the public, and inmates in a tactful, direct manner.
Minimum Qualifications:
  1. Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older.
  2. Must be a citizen of the United States or legally employable in the United States of America.
  3. High school graduate or equivalent.
  4. Completion of an accredited nursing program leading to licensure with the ability to practice as a licensed practical nurse.
  5. Must possess a valid license to practice as a licensed practical nurse issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  6. Minimum of one (1) year nursing experience, preferably in a correctional center.
  7. A combination of education and experience equivalent to these qualifications may be substituted.
  Special Requirements:
  1. Must possess a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver's license.
  2. Must maintain a telephone in residence for emergency contact.
Other:

This is a non-exempt position as defined in the Fair Labor Standards Act. This is a designated position, which requires the employee to report to work under the facilities inclement weather policy. Required to work weekends, holidays, and shift work as needed.
