DETENTION OFFICER

POSITION SUMMARY: This position reports to the designated sergeant. You are responsible for the custody and discipline of detainees assigned to the unit in compliance with Management & Training Corporation (MTC) and Otero County and the United States Marshals Service (USMS) directives. If assigned to the transportation department you will responsible for the transporting of detainees to and from the facility in accordance with established procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Search for contraband and provide security.
  2. Count, feed and supervise detainees in housing, work and other areas.
  3. Provide custody and security of detainees including observation of detainees, which includes long periods of sitting and standing.
  4. Perform specific security functions including “pat” and Strip searches”, by squatting and bending to perform such functions.
  5. Transfer and transport detainees by walking or riding in vehicles. Restrain and secure assaultive detainees, as needed.
  6. Respond to emergencies to search for detainees, administer first aid at the emergency site, carry an injured or unconscious detainee, and perform use of force procedures, including the use of chemical agents to control detainees.
  7. Properly prepare and maintain records, forms and reports, as appropriate.
  8. Perform specific duties if assigned to the following areas: commissary, property, transportation, recreation, escort/roving, mailroom, laundry, visiting room, booking, mobile patrol, main control, housing, administration/segregation and intake.
  9. Promote the development of positive social skills through modeling appropriate behaviors and intervening when inappropriate behaviors are observed.
  10. Maintain accountability of staff, detainees and property; adhere to safety practices.
It is expected that the incumbent shall perform other duties as assigned within his/her capabilities as determined by management.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

High school diploma or equivalent. You must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid driver’s license in the State of New Mexico or the State of Texas with an acceptable driving record unless it is waived by management. If you are assigned as a transportation officer, you must possess a valid CDL license by the State of New Mexico with an acceptable driving record. New Mexico Corrections Department Corrections Officer certification preferred.
