Description: Miami-Dade County is seeking a progressive, experienced, and results-oriented Director to lead the Miami-Dade County Corrections and Rehabilitation Department

Located along the southeast tip of the Florida peninsula and covering over 2,000 square miles, Miami-Dade County is bound by Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Everglades National Park to the west, and the Florida Keys to the south, and Broward County to the north. Miami-Dade County has a population of 2.6 million, making it the most populous county in Florida and the seventh-most populous county in the United States. It is subdivided into 34 municipalities and an unincorporated area; it is governed by a Strong Mayor and a Board of County Commissioners from 13 single member districts. Miami-Dade County offers year-round warm weather, and an abundance of diverse family and social activities including 260 parks, miles of beaches, world-class museums and cultural venues, three professional sports teams, highly rated restaurants and a vibrant night life. It provides quality public and private education, diverse colleges and universities, excellent healthcare facilities, and a booming economy fueled by the County-operated Miami International Airport and the Port of Miami that welcomes 35 million and 4.8 million passengers a year, respectively.

With a planned budget of $325 million and over 3,060 employees, Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation operates the eighth largest jail system in the country.

This is highly responsible executive level work in planning and directing the operations of the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department. This position will be responsible for coordinating the Department’s daily operations which includes overseeing the activities of its four correctional facilities, rehabilitative and alternative to incarceration programs, and ancillary services.

The Director is responsible for over 3,060 full-time employees engaged in various levels of jail detention operations, administration, training, finance, and planning and rehabilitative program services. This includes inmate care, custody and control activities, food service management, monitored release services, pretrial release services, facilities operation and management, internal affairs, professional compliance and accreditation, and coordination of litigation activities. The Director also coordinates the development and implementation of long-term and short-term departmental goals and objectives and coordinates the care and services of the entire inmate population. The Director of the Corrections and Rehabilitation Department is a County employee who is appointed by the County Mayor.
Special Instructions: Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Business Administration or related field and at least seven years of progressively responsible supervisory and management experience in a large-scale correctional organization. The selected candidate must have certification as a law enforcement officer (Corrections) or obtain one within one year of employment.
