Description: RESPONSIBILITIES: The purpose of this classification is to provide leadership and direction to employees who maintain care, custody and control of over 1,200 inmates; and, provide a constitutional level of care within budget.

This classification works under administrative supervision, developing and implementing programs within organizational policies and reports major activities to executive level administrators through conferences and reports.

Oversees and leads the daily operations, development, and management of the division.

Represents the division in public meetings and coordinates with other divisions, departments, and outside agencies on various projects, as needed.

Directs the development of internal policies, procedures, standards, guidelines and regulations; ensures compliance with all laws and regulations.

Prepares various reports for administration and provides special reports, policy, and procedure documents related to goals, objectives, and performance.

Responsible for achieving major economies or preventing major losses through the management of a large department, or through interpreting policy as legal counsel.

Reads and interprets professional materials involving advanced bodies of knowledge related to politics, economics, technology, law, medicine, and other complex disciplines; writes extremely complex papers and reports; speaks to high level scientific, political, economic, legal, medical, or other such groups.

Decision-making almost entire focus of job, affecting most segments of the organization and the general public; works in a highly dynamic environment, responsible to establish goals, objectives and policies.

Performs work involving the application of logical principles and thinking to solve practical problems within or applying to a unit or division of the organization; requires continuous, close attention for accurate results and frequent exposure to unusual pressures.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
For positions located within the Division of Community Corrections, must be a United States citizen; must be at least 21 years of age; subject to extended duty hours and a 24-hour call back; subject to shift work holidays and weekend duty; must not have been convicted of a felony or serious misdemeanor; and, subject to an extensive background check and bi-annual tuberculosis testing.

Must be able to operate Urban County Government equipment and vehicles in a safe, prudent and responsible manner.

All positions require drug testing before employment and may require a post-job offer physical as stated in Ordinances 21-14(b), 22-13 and 23-16.

Pursuant to the Drug Free Workplace Act of 1988 and to sections 21-52, 22-34 and 23-50 of the Code of Ordinances, all employees must remain drug and alcohol free when reporting to work, while at work and while engaged in any work related activities.

Based on Federal Regulations 19-10 this position may be eligible for and offered the hepatitis vaccinations. In addition, employees will be required to sign a statement stating they have accepted or declined the hepatitis vaccination.

Valid driver's license.
Special Instructions: MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in corrections, criminal justice, business administration or related field; and, over ten (10) years of progressive experience in the criminal justice field with a preference in corrections; or, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
