Description: Oregon Youth Authority (OYA) is looking for candidates for the Group Life Coordinator 2 position for each facility throughout Oregon. If hired, you will become part of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

The Group Life Coordinator 2 ensures a safe and secure environment for the public, youth offenders, and staff. The Group Life Coordinator 2 provides pro-social role modeling by working directly with youth offenders carrying out the specific day to day functions of each unit. This includes coaching, confronting, and correcting the behavior of youth offenders.

If you do not meet the minimum qualifications for the Group Life Coordinator 2, then based on your professional experience and skills you would eligible to be considered for a temporary Group Life Coordinator 1. After gaining the appropriate work experience, you would be eligible to re-apply for a Group Life Coordinator 2 position.

The Group Life Coordinator (GLC) supports and maintains a dynamic environment that moves youth offenders through a treatment process promoting the acceptance of responsibility, healthy habits, productive life styles, and socially acceptable conduct.

This position provides continuous direct visual supervision of youth. The position oversees daily activities and instructs youth on matters of appropriate behavior, personal hygiene, and proper dress. Group Life Coordinators provide daily supervision, control, and treatment of adjudicated youth and youth from Department of Corrections in a secure correctional facility.

NATURE OF THE WORK
  • Support the positive potential of each youth and their reformation plan through daily interaction.
  • Ensure that employee interaction with youth is consistent with individual treatment plans while counseling and guiding to continue to establish rapport.
  • Observe, evaluate, and record youth behavior, attitude, and performance. Record youth attendance and participation in treatment groups, recreations, vocational/educational activities, and/or community service.
  • Document unusual incidents and critical events in daily logs.
  • Prepare Youth Incident Reports (YIRs) on the youth incidents that are observed or participated in.
  • Acknowledge appropriate behavior, confront inappropriate behavior, and address as necessary while conducting regular one-on-one coaching and mentoring sessions.
  • May verbally and/or physically intervene to control youth offender behavior. May physically restrain youth as necessary.
  • Assign, train, and supervise youth who are performing chores on living units and jobs within the facility (e.g., maintenance, kitchen, laundry, landscaping, janitorial, etc.).
  • Supervise youth performing community based work crew activities where appropriate.
  • Observe and monitor youth offenders for suicide prevention and potential health and safety risks.
  • Conduct security inspections and searches of facility, grounds, and state vehicles.
  • Administer medication to youth (under the training and indirect supervision of medical staff) and maintain contact with medical staff to ensure appropriate medical care for the youth.
  • May provide secure transport of youth to appointments within the community.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • OYA facilities are tobacco free environments.
  • Shift work in a 24-hour, 7-day a week operation, with night shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
  • Adhere to the dress code of the specific work site.
  • Frequent exposure to verbal abuse, threats, and dealing with impulsive, rebellious, assaultive youth.
  • The use of reasonable force in the performance of duties or during a disturbance or other emergency situation may be required.
  • Physical standards for vision, hearing, dexterity, push/pull, running, and jogging.
  • Transport youth as requested, and, if in a security position, operate state vehicles constantly.
QUALIFICATIONS, REQUIRED & REQUESTED SKILLS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • You must be 21 years of age or older and possess a valid driver license and acceptable driving record.
  • You must possess a high school diploma or GED certificate, or other proof of education at the same or higher level AND ◦Six months full-time experience working with 12 to 18 year-old juvenile delinquent adolescents in either a residential care or treatment program; OR
  • An Associate degree from an accredited school in a behavioral science or certificate from a community college or other equivalent training program.

  • Ability to assist youth in working through difficult conflicts.
