Description: | The Counselor works under the supervision of the Assistant Director. Parameters of the Position 1. The Counselor works within the rehabilitative framework designed by the Assistant Director that includes, but is not limited to: a. Individual and group counseling; b. Specialized habilitation methods; c. Use of community resources; and d. Resident management and control. 2. General Counseling Duties – The Counselor is responsible for: a. Conducting the returning citizen’s/client’s orientation to the program and assuring their understanding and complying with the rules and expectations of the program on a continuous basis; b. Completing an assessment tool to prepare program plans for re-entry; c. Utilizing individual counseling to develop returning citizen’s/client’s release plans and monitoring the development of that plan; d. Preparing and submitting reports to the prescribed criminal justice agencies or judiciary with the approval of the Director; e. Keeping accurate case notes and preparing case reports in a timely fashion; f. Playing a lead role in staffing; g. Participating in in-service and other training programs that enhance counseling, case management, life/safety, and administrative skills; h. Developing and maintaining relationships with appropriate social service agencies; i. Assisting in the planning, developing, implementing, monitoring accountability and leading of returning citizens and operational programs; j. Collecting resource demographic, and research data as directed; k. Testifying in court when so directed, and l. Performing other duties as assigned. Education & Qualification The Counselor must possess at a minimum an Associate’s degree; Bachelor’s degree is preferred in criminal justice, sociology, social work, psychology, or a related field profession from an accredited college or university. At a minimum, at least two (2) years of relevant human services experience is required. Work experience may be substituted for academic studies, exchanging one year of work experience in a related field, for one year of academic education. Must be familiar with the area surrounding the facility, and willing to travel up to one hundred (100) miles, each way from the office. Must be highly skilled in Microsoft Word and Excel and display the ability to format and create documents, reports and charts independently. Must have a valid driver’s license, a good driving record and a reliable vehicle. Clearance Employees assigned to this position, must satisfy all requirements under the contracts with applicable federal state and local government agencies. All employees must pass an NCIC criminal record background check, after conditional offer of employment. Each employee will be fingerprinted by the Bureau of Prisons staff and/or a designee, and is subject to investigation.
