Description: The Mental Health Clinician II (MHC II) at the Nome Youth Facility (NYF) is a professional position responsible for the clinical support of staff at NYF. The MHC II will be familiar with the various NYF unit programs and needs and act as a resource for maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of these programs.

The position is equally responsible for providing a broad range of mental health counseling and services to residents and families, facilitating interventions from a strengths based and trauma informed approach that embraces the balanced approach of Restorative Justice, and providing clinical guidance and training for facility staff and Juvenile Probation Officers regarding how to work effectively with youth experiencing mental illness.

Under general supervision of the Mental Health Clinician III and as a part of a multidisciplinary treatment team, the successful MHC II performs a wide range of services in the facility, including:
  • Provides ongoing clinical support and guidance to line staff regarding monitoring/managing resident behavior and the implementation of appropriate interventions.
  • Facilitate effective response(s) to crisis situations in accordance with facility policies and procedures.
  • Reviews and responds to suicide and self-harm screenings and assessments which includes developing suicide safety plans.
  • Work effectively and safely with a broad array of youth with varying mental health issues and difficult behaviors.
  • Provides individual, family, and group therapy and crisis intervention as needed.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary case management meetings and formally documenting clinical observations (e.g. behavior response to medication) for use by contract psychiatrist and clinicians.
  • Provides training to both institutional and probation staff in areas relevant to adolescent development; how trauma affect individuals, family dynamics and interactions; cognitive impairment; mental health diagnoses; substance abuse, suicide prevention and Interface with the court and members of the legal community in a professional capacity (e.g. expert and/or factual testimony, court ordered mental health assessments).
  • Facilitate response(s) to crisis situations in accordance with probation and facility policies and procedures.
  • Written and verbal assessments of the mental health needs of juveniles and develops coordinating interventions to address those needs.
