Description: Position Overview:

Under close supervision of the Administrative Lieutenant, the Clerk shall become knowledgeable of all City, State, Federal and CDCR regulations, which governs the following: mail handling and processing; authorized inmate clothing, facility cleaning supplies, and acceptable laundry protocol; and inmate canteen processes. The Clerk shall be responsible to perform other duties associated with the functionality of the DMCCF and other duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Thoroughly examine mail for contraband and distribute to the facility.
  • Ensure the proper allowance of indigent inmate envelopes, paper and pictures per inmate.
  • Correctly process all monies by insuring correct name, CDCR number of the inmate and stamping the outside of the envelope indicating monies received.
  • Process inmate disallowed mail accordingly.
  • Answer incoming telephone calls directed to the mailroom.
  • Must maintain control of all materials and equipment which may be used as potential weapons.
  • Report unusual occurrences and/or breaches of security.
  • Inspect premises for contraband such as weapons or illegal drugs.
  • May be called upon to assume general custody responsibilities in time of emergency.
  • Maintain fair and firm discipline.
  • Order, receive, store, issue and inventory clothing, linen, shoes, materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Supervise the laundry operations.
  • Ensure all equipment, washers, dryers and chemical dispensers are operating properly.
  • Order, receive, store, issue and inventory of canteen/store product.
  • Establish and maintain a price list of all items available for sale in canteen.
  • Facilitate canteen window sales.
  • Facilitate inmate food sales.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records.
  • Maintain cleanliness of all pertinent work and storage areas.
  • Train and instruct inmate work crews in their job assignments, maintain order and supervise the conduct of inmates while unloading trucks and performing all job related functions.
  • Maintain accurate inmate timekeeping records and complete performance evaluations of inmate workers.
  • Conduct searches for inmate contraband.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
  • High School Diploma or an equivalent certificate or diploma recognized by the State of California.
  • Minimum age of 21 or attain same by date of appointment.
  • One to two years of related experience or training preferred.
  • Operate a keyboard with a tested speed of at least 35 (net) words per minute.
  • Maintain a valid California Driver License with a driving record acceptable to the City.
