Repeal N.Y. Mandatory Minimums, Cuomo Says
By New York Times
Published: 08/19/2002

Mandatory minimum prison sentences for nonviolent, low-level drug offenders should be repealed, said New York gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo recently.
The New York Times reported Aug. 6 that Cuomo said current Gov. George Pataki and Democratic rival H. Carl McCall are not doing enough to address the problem.
Pataki has supported reform of the so-called Rockefeller Drug Laws, but his proposals stalled in the state legislature this year.
McCall also has called for changes in the sentencing rules, but stopped short of endorsing a repeal. Cuomo called for a commission to be established that would develop new sentencing guidelines.
