More than a year after Anton Cooper's battered and naked body was found in his prison cell, two officers have been charged with killing him. Prison officers Dave George and Davanand Ramdial appeared in court August 19 to face the murder charges. Both men made a brief court appearance Arima. Cooper's relatives as well as regional and international human rights groups had called for an investigation into the death. In June, the Caribbean country's government pledged to speed its investigation. Cooper, 24, was found dead in his cell June 26, 2001, his body bearing wounds at the back of his head, a cut on his face and multiple bruises. He had been arrested less than 24 hours before on charges of assault and battery. A pathologist ruled that Cooper had died from 'asphyxia associated with multiple blunt traumatic injuries,' but no full autopsy report has been released. Prison authorities have never explained publicly how Cooper died at the Golden Grove Remand Center in Arouca, about 12 miles north of the capital, though they denied other inmates' reports that Cooper was beaten to death by officers. In a report released in June, the London-based human rights group Amnesty International said other prisoners had reported seeing Cooper 'severely beaten by approximately nine prison officers.' 'After being beaten, he complained of severe pain and requested to see a doctor, whereupon the officers returned and beat him again,' the report said, citing other prisoners' statements. |
